An ulpan is a school that teaches people basic Hebrew skills. This involves written and spoken Hebrew, along with Israel’s history, culture, citizenship and geography. The main purpose of ulpan is to help immigrants to integrate as easily and as rapidly as possible into Israel’s way of life.
The very first ulpan, called Ulpan Etzion, was opened in Jerusalem in 1949
Learning Hebrew in ulpan is total immersion. There are no other languages used in all activities except for Hebrew. All lessons, audio-video materials, conversations and interactions are in Hebrew.
Ulpan language learning is an intensive program. A typical course runs for five month. There are about 28 hours of instruction per week. Usually, classes are limited to a 20 students per class, and are offered at various proficiency levels.

A kibbutz is a collective farm or a settlement. Thus, a kibbutz ulpan involves learning Hebrew within a collective farm. Kibbutz Ulpan involves a 5 month work-study program for young adults.
